Pulitzer Prize-winning ecology expert Jared Diamond
2009 Contemporary Issues Forum speaker
Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Guns, Germs and Steel," will be the keynote speaker at the seventh annual Coe College Contemporary Issues Forum on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium. Tickets will be available beginning January 14 by calling the Coe Box Office at 319-399-8600 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Diamond is universally regarded as one of the greatest minds of our time, with expertise in multiple disciplines leading to fascinating theories on ecology and environmental issues. Author of several best selling books, Diamond's interests range from environmental history through evolutionary biology to molecular biology.
Between Town Hall and Cathedral: The Rise of Siena and Florence
Coe Philosophy Professor Jeffrey Hoover opens the Thursday Forum new year with a two-week examination of two successful city-states that emerged during the late Middle Ages in northern Italy. The lectures will be held Jan. 8 and 15 beginning at 9:15 p.m.in Kesler Lecture Hall of Hickok Hall. Cost is $10 per session.
"Third Grade Clay" returns to Coe
More than 1,400 third graders from 22 area elementary schools will display their "Third Grade Clay" artwork from Jan. 23 through Feb. 3 in the Marvin Cone and Eaton-Buchan Galleries of Sinclair Auditorium.The opening of the exhibit and a reception for the young artists and their families will take place in the Sinclair lobby on Jan. 23, from 5 - 7 p.m. Regular gallery hours are 3 - 5 p.m. daily.
